Vocabulary flashcards with audio
Learning words takes three things: hearing them, seeing them again and again, and checking yourself. In Teaching Mate one word list does all three: it becomes cards on a page, flashcards and quiz questions, and every word in it can be heard.

One word list, used everywhere
A word list holds each word with its meaning. You can add an emoji or a picture, a note (such as "masculine"), an example sentence with its translation, and tags to group the words. In the Studio you edit the list as a table and press the speaker button next to a word to hear it.
Then use the list:
- On a page, as a table, as cards with emoji or pictures, as cards that hide the meaning until they are tapped, or as a plain list.
- As flashcards, with the word, the meaning or either one on the front.
- In quizzes, where it makes the questions for you: meanings, translations, listening, true or false, matching, and example sentences to put in order. See the quiz maker.
How the flashcards work
A student sees the front of a card, can hear it, and flips it to check. Then they tell the app honestly: Again or Got it. A card they did not know comes back a few cards later, and the set ends only when they know every card. The finished set is saved to their progress, and teachers see it with the rest of their results.
Audio for every word
Students tap a word to hear it: in word lists, on pages wherever the author marked a word or a phrase as speakable, and in quiz questions.
- Spanish is recorded with natural voices from ElevenLabs. The recordings are made on the server a few seconds after a course is saved, so authors write text and the audio follows. Dialogues can use a woman's and a man's voice.
- Other languages are read by the learner's own device, with the voice it has for that language.
- Slow audio: the turtle button plays everything more slowly, for beginners and for hard words.
Each author has a monthly allowance of recorded characters, which is plenty for word lists and short texts.
Lessons that speak
The free course Spanish for beginners goes further. Each lesson has speakers with their own voices and pictures: Lola, a goth girl; little Pepe and little Sofía; Tío Paco; Abuela Carmen; and sporty Dani. A girl says "Estoy cansada", a boy "Estoy cansado", so students hear the right form. Every Spanish word can be tapped to see its English in a bubble and hear it, and in some exercises students say a sentence aloud: speech recognition checks it, Teaching Mate does not keep the recording, and anyone who cannot speak at that moment can skip.
Free for your class
Word lists, flashcards and audio are part of Teaching Mate, which is free for teachers and students. Give the course to your class as a group and every student has it in their library, on the web and in the Android app.
