Teaching Mate is a small learning app (website and Android app). Teachers make courses and look after groups of students; students learn with the courses. It is run privately by its administrator. This page explains what it stores and why.
What we store
- Your account: your e-mail address (you sign in with it; a teacher who makes your account enters it), the name shown in the app, the animal you picked, and a scrambled (hashed) version of your password or PIN. We never store the password itself, and we don't send you e-mails.
- If you sign in with Google: your Google account ID and e-mail address, which Google gives us when you agree on Google's sign-in screen. We do not get your Google password, contacts or anything else.
- Your learning: which topics you opened and your quiz, test, lesson and flashcard results, including the answers you got wrong, with the date and time. In lessons every answer is kept, word by word and sentence by sentence, so that the app can bring back what you find hard and show how well you know each lesson.
- Speaking exercises: when you say a sentence aloud in a lesson, the recording is sent to our server and on to ElevenLabs, which turns it into text so the app can tell you whether it was right. We don't keep the recording or the text; we only count how many sentences you said each day (there is a daily limit). You can skip speaking ("I can't speak now"), and the administrator can switch speaking exercises off.
- The aquarium game: your gold, and the fish and decorations in your aquarium with their names.
- Sign-in sessions: a random sign-in code for each device and a short description of the device or browser.
On your device the app keeps your sign-in code, your settings and your latest progress, so it also works offline.
Why
Only so you can sign in, keep your progress on every device, so your teacher can see how you are doing and help you, and so the members of a group can compare how they do (see below). There are no ads and no tracking, and nothing is sold or shared with anyone outside Teaching Mate.
Counting visits
The website counts its visits with GoatCounter, so we know how many people come and how they find us. It sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser and does not know who you are. For each page it gets only the kind of page (for example "the sign-in page", "the library" or "a quiz", and the name of a public course) - never your name, your account, a private course or a group's code - and the site you came from, your country, browser, system and screen size. Clicks on a few links (to Silenos Works, our e-mail address, "Create an account") are counted the same way. The Android app counts nothing.
Who sees your progress
- Your teachers: when you are in a teacher's group (the teacher added you, or you joined with the group's code), that teacher sees your name and e-mail address and your progress and results, including mistakes, in the courses of their groups and in their own courses. They do not see anything else you do. When you leave the group, or the teacher takes you out, they no longer see your progress.
- The others in your group (the class results, which the group's teacher can turn off): your name, your animal and how you do in the group's courses - how many quizzes you passed, your average best score, how much you practised in the last 7 days, and your place among them. For each quiz they see only the best score and who has it; everyone else's scores are shown without names. They never see your e-mail address, your mistakes or anything outside the group's courses.
- Authors of courses see only numbers for their courses (how many people use them, average scores), not who you are.
- The administrator of the site can see all accounts and results, to run the site and help.
Where
The app runs on Fly.io servers in Frankfurt (EU). The Spanish audio was recorded with ElevenLabs from the lesson texts. The only personal data ElevenLabs gets is the recording of a speaking exercise, to turn it into text (see above); it handles it under its own privacy policy. Signing in with Google goes through Google.
How long
Until your account is deleted. The administrator can delete your account and all of your results at any time; ask them, and they will do it. A teacher who made your account can delete it too. You can also disconnect Google from your account, and leave groups you joined yourself, in the app's menu.
Children
Teaching Mate is made for learners of all ages, including children. Accounts for children should be created or approved by a parent or teacher.
